“We need a dedicated Minister for Coastal Communities” says leading Liberal Democrat

Leading Liberal Democrat Steff Aquarone, who aims to become the next MP for North Norfolk, said: "I’ve seen first hand just how much some families here are struggling. I know it’s even worse in other coastal areas. Seaside towns have their own problems, which is why I believe we need a dedicated Minister for Coastal Communities.”
Many seaside towns rely on tourism, which means a busy summer but a winter lull in incomes. Many of these towns are suffering from a decline in traditional industries like fishing, and Mr Aquarone recognises the issues which are causing concern. "People are worried about drugs and the crime that goes with them, which is a major problem in some coastal towns. They worry about increased pollution from sewage in the sea, and the constant battle against erosion, which we simply cannot ignore. And, they worry about having somewhere to live."
In attractive areas like North Norfolk, second homes and holiday accommodation put a premium on property, pricing out local people, many of whom work in tourism and service industries, something Mr Aquarone is acutely aware of: “It’s essential that we ensure local people aren’t priced out of local homes. We need land and funding for affordable housing.”
A recent opinion poll showed that voters in many coastal constituencies who voted Conservative in 2019 are now considering backing the Liberal Democrats and/or Labour at this year’s General Election.
The poll’s findings are no surprise to Mr Aquarone, who said: “People feel let down and understandably disillusioned by the Conservatives. People are worried, and people are fed up with a government beset with rule-breaking and internal bickering. They've had enough of the Conservatives who ignore their problems like not being about to get a GP appointment or find a dentist."
Steff Aquarone believes a new Ministerial post is essential for the people who live and work in coastal communities. He said: “Our seaside towns have been loved for generations, but we have to support them and the people within them. That’s why, as North Norfolk’s next MP, I will be lobbying the new government to create a Minister for Coastal Communities, a specific post to help meet the growing demands and challenges that our seaside towns and villages face. The Conservatives have had their chance but they've let our people down. We all deserve so much better.”
